I am directed to inform you that your letter

of the 18th Mav addressed to the Attorney General on the subject of the "mui-tsai" system has been forwarded to me, and to state that this question is engaging the earnest attention of the Government and that it is hoped with the co-operation of the leaders of the Chinese community to remove all that is objectionable in a system that is, and has been for ages, a feature of Chinese femily life. The matter is being dealt with through the regular official channels and no good purpose would be served by embarking on a separate correspondence.

I am to add that a copy of this correspond- ence is being sent to the Secretary of State for the Colon-

ies.
